With more than 8 years in the aviation industry and military, Tom Calil has been in the Royal Australian Air Force since 2017.
He holds a Bachelor of Aviation from Griffith University and has completed the Diploma of Aviation at the RAAF School of Air Traffic Control. He is also an aerobatic-rated commercial pilot.

Prepared decision briefs for two-star officers to deploy the Air Force aerobatic display team, the Roulettes, taking into account COVID-19 border restrictions.
Risk analysis and management of warfighting assets worth $3.2 billion and experience using Defence Records Management System (DRMS).
Operations officer responsible for a large-scale collective training activity involving 15 coalition nations.
Able to perform complex mechanical and cognitive tasks under g-force in aircraft. Achieved qualifications in hypoxia training, swim rescue drills, and tested in decision-making under stress.

Responsible for the safe execution of the exercise and incident response at the Joint Operations Room. Achieved an excellent safety record — no casualties or serious injuries in ADF's largest bilateral training event with 17,000 participants.
Build application from scratch to automate the scheduling of training courses in the RAAF out to 2025.
Displayed an ability to collate large amounts of data to enable executives to make informed, risk-managed decisions.
R&D for the RAAF innovation hub. Built solutions to real-world problems and presented two prototypes:
One-Time-Pad Messenger – a cryptography device to encode secure messages.
AWSIM – an Air Warfare Simulator to practice air-combat tactics in the classroom.
Managed the rollout of a Defence-wide platform to manage information. Resulted in significant cost savings to Defence as the new platform allowed for crews to go 'paperless'.
Allowed flight crew to more efficiently prepare their flight, perform accurate performance calculations, analyse navigation charts and easily access operations manuals.
Provides indigenous students with incarcerated parents with mentoring to support them in the classroom.
Responsible for showcasing careers in the wider Defence Force to indigenous students in Year 11 and 12.

Speech titled "When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today" delivered to 300 people in homage to Proserpine RSL’s patron, 99-year-old WWII veteran George Gnezdiloff.

Created charitable organisation Carefreight with three other pilots, and partnered with Baked Relief and GIVIT to deliver relief goods to drought-stricken farmers in the dry season, and in the wet season flew supplies to State Emergency Service in flooded towns following Tropical Cyclone Marcia.

Not-for-profit outreach program providing mentorship through simulated flying. Interactions with youth ranging from 4-16 years of age from primary schools, Air League and Air Force Cadets.
Six aircraft were flown over 6,000 miles around the country to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Served as the Flight Leader of the Bonney Flight responsible for developing a group of 50 aviators in the faculty's weekly professional development program.

"He introduced a number of improvements to the incident response capability, including a desktop switchboard function to enable fast dialing of key Skype numbers, exploitation of DSN and DRN mapping software, enhancing situational awareness through access to the RAAF Air Traffic Control chat and assisting with the development of weather prediction for the parachute insertion operations through RAAF contracted weather support.
Pilot Officer Calil provided a valuable link to both the contracted Aeromedical Evacuation organisation and to the JPRO office in Canberra. His general enthusiasm and technical support to incident management supported a safer exercise for all participants."
Recognition for qualifying efficient service of current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who have served since the end of World War II.
Awarded to a student of an aviation degree who is able to demonstrate the personal qualities to become a commercial pilot and for outstanding academic performance.
Given to students in the top 5% of the student body with a GPA of 6.0 or greater.
Given at the discretion of Defence based on merit, satisfactory completion of all requirements and the aptitude selection criteria.
