Objective

To make a difference in the lives of kids by supporting excellence in teaching, doing whatever it takes to improve student achievement, developing and improving systems at both school-site and district levels, implementing standards-based instruction in all content areas including the arts, supporting co-curricular and extracurricular activities including athletics and student leadership, supporting and mentoring school staff, and connecting with families and the community. To support the arts and arts education K-16 and make systemic improvements in order to make these improvements long-lasting.

Summary

Teaching: Bravo Award Finalist (The Bravo Award is given to the top arts educators and programs in Los Angeles each year. There were 11 finalists out of the entire county of Los Angeles). Also, Los Angeles County Music Educator of the Year. Built music program to national acclaim at Huntington Park High School, recognized by the Grammy Foundation as exemplary music program and featured in the Los Angeles Times and several professional journals. Interviewed on radio and in newspaper stories. Founded Major Program and Advanced Placement Music Theory Program. Had journal articles published in professional journals.

Administration: (Legacy Visual and Performing Arts HS) 2022 Preliminary Graduation Rate was 98%, with only 1 student not graduating on time (2nd highest in LAUSD). Increased test scores on Smarter Balanced Assessments, 8% in Math and 10% in ELA in one year (2019). Implemented online learning/virtual academy including online instruction, virtual events (Open House, Sports Orientation, Graduation, Senior Awards, Guest Speakers, Cinco de Mayo Celebration and Special Events, Coffee With the Principal), including Improved communication through better use of and redesign of the school website, utilizing Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts, weekly Monday Memo to staff, weekly phone calls and podcasts to the community, Coffee with the Principal, and high visibility at student events and in classrooms, New programs and activities included new Swim Team and boys/girls water polo teams, new Korean language classes (new partnership with Korean Language and Culture Foundation), new piano class, new vocal workshop, new show choir, new music technology class, new Academic Decathlon class/team, new boys/girls golf teams, new marching band, and new/revived glee club. (Verdugo Hills HS) Founded Instructional Cabinet, Started Test Prep Advisory Program, Founded and Directed Glee Club who performed throughout the community and was featured in local newspapers and on NBC-Universal News, Revived Musical Theatre program and directed music for Spring Musical (South Pacific), Supported all academic and extracurricular programs, arts, and athletics, Improved community relations and PR with the use of Facebook, Twitter, School Website, Marquee and other media, helped improve scores on CAHSEE and CSTs, developed and implemented a Visual and Performing Arts academy Magnet, founded Jazz Choir and a Capella Vocal groups. (Polytechnic HS) Founded Freshmen Centre (ninth grade academy) at Polytechnic High School. Program led to 95% 10th Grade matriculation rate in one year (up from 73%), doubled the graduation rate when the freshmen of the first class were seniors, and dramatically improved student achievement and school climate. In 2008, Poly exited Program Improvement status, in part to the success of academic improvements started with the Freshmen Centre. Following the success of the Freshmen Centre, there were over 20 ninth grade academies in the Los Angeles Unified School District, many of them using the Poly model after conducting visits to the Centre. Presented several workshops at national conferences including Talent Development High Schools and the Education Trust and Education Trust, West. Guided and supported Fine Arts, Media, and Entertainment Small Learning Community (FAME). (Manual Arts HS) High School Principal of the Year (Association of California School Administrators) in 2008 (out of 75 high school principals in Region 16, LAUSD). Made dramatic improvements in every part of the school including instruction (all contents areas including the arts), organization, school plant, and extracurricular program/athletics. School exited the School Intervention and Assistance Team (SAIT) program in 2008. Guided and supported School of Performing and Applied Arts Small Learning Community (SPAA) and New Media Academy. (City of Angels School) Developed online courses and programs in collaboration with school and district specialists including City of Angels Virtual Academy Summer School (Summer, 2010) and COA Virtual Academy (Fall, 2010). Developed City of Angels Visual and Performing Arts Academy (Fall, 2010). Rallied school community and district staff to increase enrollment by reaching out to possible drop-outs and others resulting in an increase of 800 students saving 24 teaching positions. Established programs to support students and increase parent involvement including Coffee with the Principal, PTSA, and the English Learners Advisory Council.
