Erin Roche consistently demonstrates success as a Principal in the Chicago Public School system, leading his school faculty, staff, and students to significant academic and budgetary improvements. Since 2002, Erin Roche has held administrative positions at four separate Chicago Public Schools: Boone Elementary School, Noble Street Charter High School, Ravenswood Elementary School, and Prescott Magnet Cluster School.

While Assistant Principal at Noble Street Charter High School, Erin Roche was able to reorganize the security staff schedule to save the school more than $15,000 each year. Roche also reduced student detention and suspensions by 10 percent through a strategy that focused on positive intervention and prevention.

As Principal of Ravenswood Elementary School, Erin Roche successfully led his team and his students to earn recognition from the State of Illinois: a Spotlight School award and Academic Achievement awards. During his tenure, 15 percent of his middle-school students matriculated to the best high schools in Chicago; six students received more than $80,000 in scholarships by winning the Daniel Murphy Scholarship.

Erin Roche also led the school to a new status: Autonomous Management and Performance School, recognizing the success by Roche and his team in placing in the top 15 percent of the school system. Most impressively, Erin Roche’s leadership resulted in a 15-point increase in reading scores and a 20-point increase in math scores.

Finally, at Prescott Magnet Cluster School, Erin Roche’s leadership efforts have led to a 13-point increase in ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) scores for his students over a 3-year period. Demonstrating his commitment to his students, Erin Roche has set the vision and the strategy to focus the school’s energies and efforts for ongoing academic and management improvement.

Increased reading scores fifteen points to 71% meets/exceeds standards; and increased math scores by twenty points to 73%. Achieved Autonomous Management and Performance Schools (AMPS) status: top 15% of CPS 600 schools to meet Annual Yearly Progress in academics and management goals. Averaged 15% of 8th graders matriculated to elite Chicago high schools such as Northside College Prep; six students over four years won Daniel Murphy Scholarship (valued at $80,000). Earned Spotlight and Academic Achievement Awards from State of Illinois (2007). Piloted New Leaders for New Schools interim assessments. Led Grade Level Teams to write professional goals, analyze quarterly assessments, and develop school-wide criteria for Balanced Literacy. Overhauled English as a Second Language program to include ESL students in general education. Created system to analyze Special Education needs, which increased SPED staff from six to eleven.

Fundraising, Budget, and Human Resources

Supervised 54 staff, including 34 teachers with an average of 16 years of experience; made over 700 classroom visits each school year; enhanced feedback system with regular mini-observation. Hired over 15 faculty and staff through extensive recruiting and rigorous selection processes . Made policy and budgetary decisions for $3.7M annual budget including negotiations with the Local School Council’s annual $450,000 in non-earmarked funds; won over $200,000 in professional development grants (including annual position) and additional $300,000 in new programs. Worked with parents to create legally-recognized not-for-profit organization, Friends of Ravenswood School, and solicit donations worth over $40,000 in three years. Mentored aspiring principals: two New Leaders for New Schools Residents and two Concordia College interns.

Boone Elementary School

Formally observed and supervised 17 teachers in grades 3-7 and special education.Visited all satellite campus classrooms approximately 900 times to gather data on instruction quality and provide feedback via weekly meetings and regular notes.Led on-going teacher-driven action-research to identify high-results learning activities in vocabulary.Facilitated two teacher-made unit assessments on student growth in vocabulary.Results include student vocabulary average scores of 84% on both unit assessments.

Budget & Human Resources

Budgeted and managed funds for After-School Counts program for over 500 students. Managed daily operations at Boone School satellite campus of 150 students including student discipline, scheduling, parent and community relations, and formal staff observations for 12 teachers.


New School Planner

National Teachers Academy

Designed professional development residency component. Inventoried CPS professional development as recorded in the "CPS Professional Development Project" (Aug. 2002). Found multiple models for innovative school-based professional development. Through Rochelle Lee Fund (now Boundless Readers), led 8 CPS teachers in improving literature and reading instruction which had an impact on over 150 students. Chicago Foundation for Education sponsored an action-research report on the RLF program; with two other researchers, found teacher higher-order discussion questions to improve from 38% to 90%. Worked with Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Board of Trustees to document admissions process and analyzed student admission trends.

Sabin Magnet School

Taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts through Jr. Great Books curriculum. Won Association of Illinois Middle School (AIMS) and Chicago Foundation for Education (CFE) grants to design Mentorship and Art program with art teacher to motivate struggling middle-school and 2nd grade readers.Students read over 150 books and painted bathroom stalls according to 2nd grade science themes. In research-based study sponsored by Teacher Network Policy Institute, found positive correlation (0.4) between middle school students’ organizational skills and academic success.  Won National Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) grant to co-create chess curricular unit with math teacher. Won five-week National Endowment for the Humanities Scholarship to University of Texas--San Antonio to study Latino literature.
