Henny Chen has more than 14 years of experience in teaching Chinese literature in Taiwan and 15 years in the U.S. She holds a Master’s degree in educational technology as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese literature. She has been the Chinese language teacher at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, California since 2007 and started the Chinese program there, teaching four Chinese classes along with a digital graphics class for years. She became a full-load Chinese teacher, teaching five different Chinese classes after the 16-17 school year. She was selected to pilot her class to support personalized learning classroom design due to her experience, presentation papers and research publication in flipped classrooms, and blended, personalized learning.
In addition to teaching at school, Henny Chen presents both nationally and internationally at conferences and workshops. She is a renowned trainer and consultant in instructional technology for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, curriculum design and program model design. Since 2008, she has been serving as the technology coordinator for UC Berkeley’s STARTALK program, which is a project funded by the National Security Agency and administered by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. Over the next few years, she developed numerous consulting projects and participated in a variety of world language education leadership projects, such as the IMPACT STARTALK program at Stanford University and a teacher-student summer combination program at the University of Virginia. She shared her four-step flipped learning model to the program and later published her model in the STARTALK conference. As a co-trainer, she provided the essential training for 12 teachers who were selected from the nation in conducting and teaching Chinese online. She also monitored a 12-day online program that supported 36 students in 33 cities from 14 states. In the fall of 2016, she started an infrastructure program at UC Berkeley’s STARTALK to develop and provide an online credential enrichment program to teachers who plan to continue their study in becoming certified teachers.
Since 2009, Chen has designed and developed online training courses for Mandarin Chinese language teachers at different levels. More than 500 teachers from 47 countries have joined the online training courses. Starting from 2011, she has designed, presented, and facilitated more than 50 online webinars for K-16 Chinese language teachers around the world. Participants in 35 cities from the U.S, along with 22 other countries, joined the webinars and have advanced their teaching skills with her help.
She was the co-founder of and currently serves as the consultant of the Chinese Language Digital Teaching Association. She also volunteers as the project manager of Huayu Digital Center at the Chinese Culture Center in Milpitas.
In late-2016, she started her ACTFL Oral proficiency training and receive her OPI tester certification in July 2017. She joined the WPT workshop in Oct. 2017 and will apply to become a WPT rater.
