Crossing Generations with Model Planes
Father John O’Neill of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church spoke at the Lewis County Public Library on May 23rd. Attendees of all ages were captivated as Father O’Neill told the history of his model-building and the history of the planes he had on display. Several of the planes had personal connections, with family members having either piloted or as passengers on the Royal Air Force planes during WWII. One of the funnier stories included a tale of how one of his relatives decided that some people have no fear, and he would much rather fly with one who had a bit of fear than none at all.
As the young children soaked up his stories, Father O’Neill must have been inspired to be extremely generous. He asked how many families were attending, and then began passing out models. One girl asked hesitantly, “Is it for me to keep?” You could feel her joy bubbling up when Father O’Neill said yes. The excitement quickly spread through the room as each child received a plane. As soon as the event ended, the children were flying around the sitting area while parents encouraged them to “be careful,” and to not “break it before we get home.” Father O’Neill himself stated that the best joy for him as a model builder is to see people enjoying and playing with them.
Thank you Father O’Neill for displaying the model aircraft in the library, and for providing more information to the attendees.
