About Me

I am a retired foreign language teacher, now working as a freelance writer, copyeditor and translator. I work primarily with entrepreneurs who need support in the writing aspects of their businesses.

Since leaving the French classroom in 2006, I have been building a business while substituting in the local schools. In 2007 I relocated to the Washington D.C. area, where I worked in Montgomery County Public Schools while helping with my mother’s care. In 2012 I returned to my family in South Texas, and resumed substituting there. My teaching experiences span every age from preschool to college, in both general and special education settings. Areas of special interest (and teaching) include World Languages, Deaf Education, History, and Math. My primary interest is in working with students who face special challenges in life. In particular, because I believe that both personal mental health and language competence are foundational to every aspect of personal, social, and financial success, my real passion is to work with those who need emotional support and an improved linguistic competence in order to build a bright future.

In building my business, I started in the field of Social Media Marketing, a good fit for someone who was born to teach and to connect. This led me to write for the entrepreneurs who needed online marketing support. Because we live near Mexico, where English is often a second language, I have a special interest in working with those who need their websites translated, or need a little ‘language polish’ in their bilingual materials. So my writing business allows me to serve clients both near and far, combining my love of language with my marketing heart.

I work primarily with women entrepreneurs and small business owners who struggle with the writing aspects of their business. I proof and edit both content and copy, write modules and blog posts, manage Facebook pages, transform author content into well-structured articles, and manage Website and flier copy and graphics. One of my favorite assignments is to write email marketing copy and  the 'About Me' page for websites. It is my goal to add color and brilliance to each entrepreneur's message, so that he is better positioned to attract his ideal clients!

I also translate web copy, articles, and a variety of marketing materials from French to English.

In my time at the International Language Institute, I have both substituted and taught ESL classes on various levels, from beginner to advanced conversation.  The curriculum and materials are well-chosen, the program administered with great precision and a dedication to student success.  My responsibilities included adhering to the program as designed, and doing all I could to enhance the student experience.  I presented each lesson from the perspective of a language teacher who is familiar with challenges that come with living in a host country, and with considerable experience in the field of language awareness and development.

research assistant to French teacher

Co-taught French with teacher exploring the effectiveness of two different methodologies with her French students. This project was for her master's thesis.  She taught her morning classes with traditional methods, while I was assigned to teach the afternoon classes with communicative methods of my own choosing and design.  We 'swapped' class assignments at the semester mark, so that both morning and afternoon would have the benefit of both methods. This led to a partnership that lasted for many years.

Alana Garrigues, Assistant Editor, Children’s Book Writers of Los Angeles

“Dear Pat, I just finished reading through your edits. It looks fabulous! Exactly like what we are looking for. The description of your process “to correct misspelled words, missing punctuation, and to replace the occasional unintended word with the intended one… adding an italicized a word or an exclamation point where I feel it adds impact to the sentence and is in alignment with the intention of the passage” is completely in line with what I had hoped! Your decisions on where to insert italics and replace em-dashes with ellipses are perfect. They really complement the authors' voices wonderfully! You caught all those little typos that would drive me crazy in print and wisely reformatted or rephrased unclear phrasing. I completely agree with your instincts in those choices. Wonderful job! THANK YOU! I knew you'd be the perfect fit as soon as I read your bid. :)” ~ Alana Garrigues, Children’s Book Writers of Los Angeles

Writing the “About Me” Story "Pat took my basic story and created a work of art. She found a way to express the passion that I have for my business directly from my heart, and highlighted the most important parts with just the right touch. I recently added a new client who said that when she read my “about me” page, she knew I was the coach she had been looking for. She stated she was so touched, she cried. I know it was Pat’s writing which drew her in like a magnet." ~ Darla Debbeler-Kirchner,

Article Completion "Before Pat completely reworked my article, I was struggling to write an article that would interest my audience while giving valuable content. But Pat worked her magic, and she created an awesome article that matched my "voice" perfectly. Pat saved me hours of frustration, and I am excited to work with her again soon!” ~ Staci Ann,

College of Wooster

I completed my BA in four years, but took one year off to return to my roots in Europe.  During that year, I worked  for 3 months at the American School of Paris, assistant to the man who had been my art teacher growing up in that school.  When school ended in June, I moved to Colchester, England, where I worked as a practical aide in a school for the adult disabled.  This pivotal year of my life lay the foundations for everything I would later pursue as an international facilitator, a teacher, an interpreter, a companion for the disabled, and, most important of all, as a parent to three forward-looking adult children, each dedicated to making a significant contribution with their lives.

Writing, Editing, Proofing
I have always written well, and enjoy the process of helping others to write for greater clarity and impact. My greatest strengths as a copy editor and proofreader lie in my attention to detail, my ability to capture the intent of the writer, and a dedication to apply my skills and insights in order to maximize the effectiveness of each written piece. And I just love what I do!! A retired French teacher who has also taught Spanish and ESL, I tutor a number of international professionals in French, English, and Writing skills, and help them to polish their documents before submission.
