I work with clay because of the connection I feel to the Earth when the clay is moving through my fingers. I love the act of creating, of taking a lump of mud and turning it into something beautiful.
The images I draw and paint on clay express my love of nature and to help people smile or even to laugh. I draw endangered animals onto my pottery to raise awareness of these magnificent creatures and their plight. Seeing ancient clay shards in museums reminds me of the longevity of pottery. My work can be a record of the creatures that have shared the earth with us.
I tend to make functional pots such as mugs, bowls, and vases because I want people to use and enjoy my pottery every day. It gives me pleasure when someone says “it's my favorite mug, I use it all the time.” When I use other artists pottery I feel a connection to that person, I hope to pass on that positive connection.
