  • Frankfurt, Germany
  • This says phone number but I fear she wouldn't have one for another two centuries

    Profile

A skilled and curious illustrator, trained in not only reading, writing, and household chores but also painting, sketching, and printing. She is regarded as the "Mother of Entomology," as a botanical artist and even recognized as one of the first ecologists. She traveled for her research, Merian is an author and naturalist. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty searching for insects to study them.

    Education

Was given a traditional girl's education

Her stepfather was a still-life painter and taught her printmaking and painting alongside her brothers. When he saw she had a gift for it, he encouraged it, unlike her brothers, she was not allowed to carry on her studies in the arts like they did.

So she when she was 13 years old, she observed silkworms, along with caterpillars, pupae and butterflies.

    Work experience

    Self employed.

    Author, writer, illustrator, entomologist, Naturalist.

    * After moving to her husband's home town, while raising a family, she taught young women how to paint and draw, spreading her teachings.

She published her first book on flowers and plant drawings.

Published her second book The Wonderful Transformation and Singular Flower Food of Caterpillars … Painted from Life and Engraved in Copper.

After saving enough money, she traveled to the Dutch colony of Surinam with her daughter. This is impressive because a woman was traveling without a man, and she paid for the expenses herself.

She published her third and most important book, The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam.

She trained her daughters in printmaking so they could help her.
