My time at LemongrassCloud represents one of the most transformative periods of my career. During these nearly four years in Cape Town, I successfully migrated enterprise clients based across the UK, Netherlands, South Africa, and Germany to AWS. I joined as their Cloud Infrastructure Architect and quickly took on leadership of a team of talented infrastructure engineers. Together, we architected enterprise cloud solutions that revolutionized how our clients operated across diverse sectors.
Throughout my tenure, I worked with more than 15 customers spanning financial services, retail, transportation, manufacturing, and energy sectors. Each migration project presented unique challenges, whether technical, regulatory, or organizational. My role consistently involved designing secure landing zones for enterprise application workloads, handling application lift-and-shifts, refactoring applications for cloud optimization, and leading teams of infrastructure engineers during complex migration projects.
Pick n Pay (02/2021 - 03/2022)
One of my proudest achievements was leading Pick n Pay's migration from their South African data centers to AWS regions in Ireland and Cape Town. This complex cross-continental project involved closing an on-premises data center and migrating all workloads to AWS Ireland.
I played a critical role in cloud cost management by overseeing workload instance selection and optimization to ensure the migration delivered financial as well as technical benefits. As the Cloud Infrastructure Architect, I designed the AWS Landing Zone for both SAP and non-SAP enterprise application migrations, creating a robust, cost-optimized infrastructure for successful cloud transition.
I managed a team of 5 consultants responsible for integration and migration, ensuring coordinated effort throughout the process. When faced with a potentially project-threatening network latency issue, I proactively engaged with third-party service providers and customer teams to conduct a thorough investigation. Through collaborative problem-solving, we identified and resolved the issue, mitigating a significant risk to the overall project.
The project not only met its deadline but positioned Pick n Pay to embrace a cloud-native approach, leveraging AWS advantages for their operations. My technical leadership and proactive approach were acknowledged by the PMO, who praised my deep technical expertise, development of excellent customer relationships, and mentorship of junior team members. My contribution was deemed critical to the overall success of Pick n Pay's non-SAP migrations.
Transport for London (01/2020 - 02/2021)
For Transport for London (TfL), I served as Infrastructure Architect on their mission-critical SAP environment migration to AWS. Working alongside skilled SAP Basis consultants and other architects, I built out the AWS landing zone from scratch, designing both the core infrastructure and the shared services account that would support TfL's SAP estate post-migration.
This project demanded meticulous planning and execution, given the mission-critical nature of TfL's operations. My expertise in infrastructure design, coupled with comprehensive understanding of AWS best practices, enabled a streamlined migration process that met all project deadlines. The resulting cloud environment significantly improved their operational efficiency and provided the resilience necessary for a system that millions of Londoners depend on daily.
Nationale-Nederlanden (03/2020 - 01/2021)
At Nationale-Nederlanden in the Netherlands, I worked as senior infrastructure consultant to build a greenfield AWS landing zone with an automated Linux platform specifically designed for their SAP migration. Beyond the technical implementation, I designed and implemented shared services that would be managed by operational teams post-migration.
A crucial part of this project was ensuring knowledge transfer to the client's team. I personally documented processes and facilitated knowledge transfer sessions to ensure a smooth transition of support to the operational teams. Following the migration, I ensured a seamless transfer of support responsibilities by creating effective documentation and thorough knowledge transfer procedures.
The migration was completed successfully within the designated project deadlines. The client teams were trained adequately, and the transition occurred without delays or disruptions. My expertise, meticulous planning, and effective collaboration with the team were specifically acknowledged by Nationale-Nederlanden leadership.
Comprehensive AWS Expertise
Throughout my time at LemongrassCloud, I honed my expertise across the AWS ecosystem, including:
- AWS computing and networking architecture
- AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure as code
- AWS Direct Connect and Transit Gateway for complex networking
- AWS WAF and security best practices
- AWS Identity & Access Management
- AWS Migration Hub and Server Migration Service
- Cost optimization and cloud financial management
Beyond technical skills, I developed robust methodologies for cloud migrations and established myself as a trusted advisor to enterprise clients undergoing digital transformation. The relationships formed and the technical challenges overcome during this period were instrumental in shaping my approach to cloud architecture and solidifying my passion for helping organizations harness the full potential of AWS.
