Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

City of Surrey

Reporting to the Manager, OHS, as the City’s Occupational Health and Safety Specialist I am accountable for supporting and contributing to the ongoing development, implementation, coordination and administration of the City’s Occupational Health and Safety Program.  Key areas of focus include incident investigation, workplace safety compliance, occupational hygiene, training, risk assessment and OHS policy and procedure development.  In this role I am responsible for:

  • Managing the OHS training program which entails conducting needs analyses, coordinating OHS training courses and events, as well as the design, development and maintenance of the OHS training manual and annual plan
  • Managing OHS, WCB Claims and the Return to Work Program for the Parks Recreation and Culture Department
  • Liaising at a senior level with clients, key contractors, regulators, industry professionals and OHS committee representatives

  • Developing and implementing safety management systems for mineral exploration and drilling companies including corporate OH&S programs and site specific safety program
  • Managing a team of safety professionals including Nurses, Health and Safety Coordinators and OFA Level 3 attendants
  • Providing leadership, guidance and technical support to operations, management and safety committees 
  • Compiling OH&S audit reports for both surface and underground drilling operations

Manager, Health and Safety

Reporting to the VP, Environment and Community Affairs, as a key member of the management team, I was directly responsible for the design, development and management of the OHS program.  Specific duties included: 

  • Preparing health and safety quarterly reports, monthly updates, statistical summaries and annual presentations
  • Overseeing implementation of the health and safety program including developing OHS policies, procedures, manuals, and support documents and maintaining the health and safety documentation system
  • Managing a team of nurses and a physician as part of our emergency response program in Guyana
  • Facilitating the corporate board of directors’ health and safety committee meetings
  • Coordinating formal training programs including Occupational First Aid Level 3, Joint Health and Safety Committee, All Terrain Vehicle Safety, TDG and WHMIS
  • Consulting with community leaders in Guyana to assist senior management with determining and addressing the needs of the local village in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding
