Alexander Nelson

As a saxophone player living in the Columbus OH area, music has been a source of fascination and excitement for all of my life. As a musician it is my dream to share that joy with others and to help kids experience the same enrichment to their lives that music has been to mine.

My professional goals are twofold.  One, to be an instrument repair technician as part of an active repair shop.  And two, to perform saxophone at a professional level in both Jazz and Classical settings, both for my own enjoyment and to continue my growth as a musician.

Professional Experience: Jazz band director and woodwind instructor for Lower Merion Township's Summer Band camp; Student teaching at William Penn High School with their band program; long term General Music substitute in the William Penn and Upper Darby school districts; Salesman for Music&Arts in Worthington, OH; Private saxophone instructor for thirteen years.

Saxophone Performance
I began playing and performing the Alto Saxophone in 1993 and have been performing since in a wide variety of settings and styles including solo, small ensemble, and large ensemble work in both Jazz and Classical music. I currently perform with the Dublin Wind Symphony and the Drastic Measures saxophone quartet., and am a frequent soloist for Linworth United Methodist and Glenwood United Methodist churches.
Instrument repair
Through my years of instrumental performance, necessity and a familiarity and comfort with fine-scale tools has caused me to become capable at repairing most common malfunctions that occur in the daily course of running a band.   More recently I have completed two courses totaling eighty hours and six credits worth of graduate study through University of the Arts.  Through this program I have experience with disassembling and cleaning brass and woodwind instruments, woodwind pad and cork replacement, and leak repairs.  Over the course of the second week I did a full cleaning, repadding and recorking of a forty year old clarinet.
Computer use
Having grown up as the son of a computer programmer, I have always had computers around and I am therefore very comfortable with their use.  I can type fluently and am familiar with most common computer applications.  I am also adept at using music-specific software, such as Sibelius.
